BMW and Audi are known for their quality vehicles that have intelligent designs and top-notch performance. The 2020 BMW X3 and the 2020 Audi Q3 are two noteworthy luxury crossovers that push the boundaries of what an adventure vehicle can be. But, of course, there are some key differences that set these two vehicles apart. So, how do they compare?

Style & Technology: The 2020 BMW X3 vs. the 2020 Audi Q3

The sleek exterior of the 2020 X3 has the signature sophistication of a BMW. Its sturdy stance and streamlined silhouette are complemented by the bold LED headlights and sculpted kidney grille. Other stylish and useful exterior features include Satin Aluminum roof rails, a roof spoiler with center brake light, power-folding heated side mirrors, and available chrome accents. The 2020 BMW X3 also has a wide array of different wheels, paint color, and other styling options so you can really make it feel like your own.

The exterior of the 2020 Audi Q3 is less sophisticated and more sporty, with more aggressively-shaped headlights and a larger front grille. Its body is 10-inches shorter in length and 4-inches shorter height than the X3, so it's more compact but less spacious inside. There are significantly fewer styling options to choose from on the Audi Q3, so there isn't much opportunity for personalization and there's a greater chance of seeing a replica of your own vehicle on Rockville roads.

The BMW X3's interior is made of premium materials and supportive seating that comfortably fits 5 passengers. You can choose between SensaTec leatherette or Vernasca genuine leather upholstery with available heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. Inside the X3 is a standard tri-zone automatic climate control, multiple power outlets, a USB port, and the unique iDrive infotainment system with an 8.8-inch touchscreen and gesture control. More luxury options on the X3 include a heated steering wheel, panoramic moonroof, and wireless charging.

The Audi Q3's smaller interior fits 5 passengers as well, but with less wiggle room, so the knees of second-row adult passengers might graze the front seats and their heads risk hitting the ceiling on bumpy roads. The Q3 is outfitted with leather seating and an 8.8-inch infotainment display like the X3, but the system is less impressive and lacks gesture control. As for cargo, the 2020 BMW X3 wins out big time with 27.6-inches behind the second row compared to the 2020 Audi Q3's 16.7-inches of cargo volume behind the second row.

Performance: The 2020 BMW X3 vs. The 2020 Audi Q3

The 2020 Audi Q3 has one engine option, a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that gets 228-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It isn't very quick, but the suspension and smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission allow for a graceful drive through winding backroads of Montgomery County. The 2020 BMW X3's base engine is also a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that gets 248-hp, slightly more power than the Q3. These engines are perfect for running errands around town and getting the kids to their scheduled activities because of their great fuel efficiency. The Q3 gets an estimated 19mpg city and 27mpg highway, while the X3's 2.0L engine gets about 25mpg city and 29mpg highway.

The 2020 BMW X3 does offer three more powertrain options, though, for Rockville drivers who like a little more excitement on their daily commute to DC. The X3 M40i's 382-hp 3.0L six-cylinder engine is impressively more powerful and thrilling to drive, and the X3 M's 473-hp 3.0L turbocharged six-cylinder blasts off with even more responsive power and speed. Finally, the X3 M Competition blows them all out of the water with its whopping 503-hp 3.0L turbo six-cylinder that gets zero to 60 in four seconds flat.

The Audi Q3's wheelbase is a full 8-inches smaller than the BMW X3, so its handling is less stable but it does gain an edge in maneuverability. The BMW X3 was designed to withstand tough terrain with its 8-inches of ground clearance and driver-adjustable suspension system, so no matter what conditions you're driving in it's going to be a smooth ride. The same couldn't be said for the less balanced Q3. Finally, the BMW X3 handles a much heavier tow with its 4,400 lbs towing max compared to the Q3's 1,500 lbs maximum.

As you can see, the 2020 BMW X3 and the 2020 Audi Q3 are exceptional vehicles in themselves, but made for different kinds of drivers. The X3 has a more flexible, spacious, and comfortable interior with plenty of luxury features that raise the bar for luxury crossovers. Its performance is smoother and more powerful, which makes overtaking vehicles on the highway and tackling rough road conditions much easier in the X3 than in the Q3. Plus, the X3 has so many more custom styling options that will make it feel more like your own.
